The first step in making the steel balls for bearings occurs here.  White-hot steel rod feeds out of furnace into a “heading” machine (right) where shears cut it into short cylinders.  These are then shaped into rough spheres by a pair of cup-like dies.  The rough balls tumble into pan set in the floor to catch them.  Worker at left culls out imperfectly formed balls with tongs.
